Adyen Expands Its Relationship With McDonald’s to The U.S. Market

Adyen NV announced late Wednesday an expansion of its agreement to process mobile-app transactions for McDonald’s Corp. to include the United States. Adyen has processed payments from mobile apps for the global restaurant chain in the United Kingdom since 2020.

As part the deal, Adyen will enable consumers enrolled in McDonald’s loyalty program to pay with their saved payment method on the McDonald’s mobile app at the front counter, at an in-restaurant kiosk, or at a drive-thru, using a four-digit code. The code is said to increase customer convenience and speed operations.

“As consumer demand evolves, Adyen has responded to our needs in a rapidly changing market,” Whitney McGinnis, U.S. chief information officer at McDonald’s, says in a prepared statement. “Adyen has handled mobile volumes during peak events, such as promotions and rush times. Additionally, they helped improve the success rate for customers registering their preferred payment types to their digital profile and reduced card declines during order placement by using real-time account updater technology. We look forward to where we take the partnership next.”

The world’s largest restaurant chain, McDonald’s has more than 39,000 locations in more than 100 countries. About 95% of McDonald’s restaurants worldwide are independently owned and operated.

“We’ve been working with McDonald’s for several years now and it’s been incredible to see how much we’ve expanded together in that time,” said Kamran Zaki, chief operating officer for Adyen, says in a statement. “McDonald’s is at the forefront of innovation in the [quick-service restaurant] space as well as increasing the standard for customer experiences, and we are happy to play a part in that global transformation, including the U.S.”

Adyen did not make executives available for comment.
