Toast Offers a C-Store POS System for Fuel and In-store Sales

Toast, known for its point-of-sale payments technology for restaurants, has launched Toast Fuel to support convenience stores in accepting payments in-store and at the pump. The expansion, which includes both retail and foodservice transactions, will enable all payments to be handled on a single platform, Toast says. C-stores sell an estimated 80% of fuel purchased by U.S. consumers, according to Toast, which cites data from the National Association of Convenience Stores.

The Boston-based payments company, founded in 2011 and widely known for its point-of-sale technology in the restaurant market, expanded into hotels in 2022 and launched Toast for Retail early last year. With its entry into the petroleum market, Toast finds itself up against a number of established payments players, including Heartland Payment Systems, Paysafe, Verifone, and Worldpay.

With c-stores, Toast says Toast Fuel offers a connected service that will solve headaches operators have experienced with existing systems that separate fueling from in-store sales. Operators have also had to juggle fuel sales with food, loyalty offerings, and digital ordering, according to Toast.

“The customer expects to buy gas, a coffee, and groceries in one stop,” says Omri Traub, chief operating officer of retail at Toast, in a statement. “Toast Fuel unifies that entire experience on a single platform.” At the pump, Toast says it will offer an “offline mode” for transaction processing in the case of an interruption in Internet service.

Toast’s move into c-stores comes as industry sales in the U.S. market hit $817.5 billion in 2025, including both fuel and in-store sales, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores. Foodservice and merchandise alone totaled $341.2 billion, up 1.7% from 2024. Gasoline sales, though, dropped 5.4%, to $476.3 billion. C-stores account for about 80% of all U.S. fuel sales, according to the association. Toast did not immediately respond to questions regarding c-store demand for new POS services at the pump or inside the store.
