Square Scoops up Whit’s Frozen Custard; Setomatic Unveils SpyderWash for Laundromats

Block Inc.’s Square point-of-sale unit said early Thursday it will support transactions at just under 100 locations belonging to Whit’s Frozen Custard, a 23-year-old restaurant chain based in Granville, Ohio. The move comes as the chain begins planning expansion to more locations.

Whit’s, which operates stores in 11 states located mostly in the Southeast, says it has already installed a range of Square products, including Square Register, Square for Restaurants, Square for Franchises, and the company’s kitchen-display system. Whit’s franchisees estimate the technology will save $2,000 per location in processing and software expenses, Whit’s reports. Square is the point-of-sale unit of San Francisco-based Block Inc.

The frozen-custard chain adds it is beginning to adopt Square’s drive-through POS technology, as well as integrations that it expects will refine online ordering, loyalty offerings, and the company’s mobile app.

“Food [and] beverage franchises require a delicate balance of independence on the ground and uniformity at the brand level,” said James Schonziet, Square’s head of food and beverage, in a statement. “Whit’s is a prime example of what we aim to enable on both fronts.”

Square has had a busy summer, with one of its most recent moves a decision in August to join Toast in becoming the first POS companies to enable agentic food ordering within Google Maps.

In other POS news, Setomatic Systems on Wednesday unveiled SpyderWash POS, aimed at laundromats and programmed to combine payment processing with technology that manages wash and fold orders. The technology includes contactless card acceptance at washers and dryers, with integrated wash-and-fold transactions.

A Boca Raton, Fla.-based specialist in payments systems for laundromats, Setomatic says SpyderWash accepts cards, mobile payments via NFC, loyalty cards, and coins. The opportunity for cards at laundromats, however, appears wide open. Some 44.1% of these establishments accept card payments now, according to Setomatic research.

Setomatic’s most recent move comes as laundromat customers increasingly leave coins and bills at home, the company says.
