Sam’s Club’s Scan & Go Pulls Up at the Fuel Pump

Sam’s Club, the warehouse-retail arm of Walmart Inc., is bringing its Scan & Go self-checkout technology to more than 500 Sam’s Club fuel stations.

Called Scan & Go Fuel, the mobile-payment service will enable consumers to make contactless payments using the Sam’s Club app at 518 Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2020. The service had been in testing earlier this year at 70 stores, Sam’s Club says in a blog post

To use the service, consumers with the Sam’s Club app click on the Scan & Go icon then scan the Quick Response code displayed on the pump’s screen. After verifying the pump number and authorizing the transaction, the pump activates and the consumer can fill her gas tank. Receipts are sent to the email address on file.

The service eliminates the step of having to dip a credit or debit card into the pump’s reader and reduces the number of times someone has to touch the pump.

Scan & Go in Sam’s Club stores launched in 2016 and its adoption rate by members has doubled since last year, Sam’s Club says. The company says it does not expect usage will slow down because many members continue to want quick and safe shopping experience.
