Eye on POS: Global Infuses Genius Handheld with AI; Pax To Debut Self-Service Smart Kiosk

Global Payments Inc. intends for artificial-intelligence capabilities to make its Genius handheld point-of-sale device easier for users while it also launches self-service kiosks. But it’s not the only payment-device provider eyeing that market. PAX Technology Inc. will showcase its self-service Smart Kiosk this week, too, at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago.

Global Payments says the addition of the AI utility to the Genius handheld device will allow servers to have conversations with customers while the POS system builds the ticket in the background, which should allow servers more time to interact with diners.

Among the device’s other features are multiple microphones to pick up what’s said, with 5G cellular connectivity with EMV and NFC payments built in. A magnetic-stripe reader is optional. The device also employs USB-C charging and multiple charging bay stations.

Global also will tout its new self-service kiosks that enable various configurations, such as countertop, floor-standing, or panel-mounted. The kiosks are available in screen sizes of 21.5 inches, a 10-inch all-in-one device, and a 21.5-inch panel PC. Global is advertising Genius in a new campaign featuring Roy Choi, a noted restaurateur and chef.

“These new kiosks share the same payments and design DNA as our countertop and handheld devices, so operators can deploy self-ordering without managing a second stack,” David Rumph, Global’s president of SMB, says in a statement.

PAX’s booth at the restaurant show will mark the debut of its Smart Kiosk, an Android-based system available with a 16-inch or 21.5-inch display.

PAX also will display its PIN pad devices, which also have displays and use the Android operating system.
