Bluefin Launches BluePOS, Aimed at PAX Devices

Bluefin Payment System LLC, an Atlanta-based company specializing in payments security at the point of sale, late Wednesday launched BluePOS, payment software designed for point-of-sale devices from PAX Technology Inc.

The new technology, which uses Bluefin’s PayConex gateway, signals a move by the company to develop new products completely in-house and at its own pace, Bluefin said. “We’re able to move faster, respond directly to client needs, and continuously enhance the payment experience without relying on third-party release cycles,” said Tim Barnett, Bluefin’s chief technology officer, in a statement.

In other respects, the new device handles common tasks including refunds, voids, and authorizations, Bluefin says, along with tipping, receipts, and manual entry. It also offers contactless capability.

The new technology signals a move by Bluefin to develop new products completely in-house and at its own pace.

For now, the technology is rolling out on Android devices from PAX in phases, Bluefin says. The deployment is starting with standalone applications and will move later to “more complex integration environments,” the company announced. A company spokesperson did not immediately respond to inquiries from Digital Transactions News regarding the new device.

Besides PAX, Bluefin has been active in supporting other POS device makers. In May last year, it agreed to integrate its Decryptx point-to-point encryption technology with devices from Verifone Inc. The collaboration is aimed at c-stores and gas stations globally, the companies said. At the time, Verifone devices were deployed at more than 50,000 c-stores and gas stations.

That development was followed in February by an announcement that Bluefin would work with Basis Theory, a tokenization platform, to capture and tokenize sensitive payments data for use across multiple channels.

PAX, too, has been active in partnerships meant to support its devices. A recent case emerged in September with news that the terminal company would partner with Payroc in an effort to ease the way for independent software vendors to use services from both companies. The effort was part of what Payroc calls its BroadPOS Program.
