Worldpay LLC has launched an open-source standard to help developers create artificial intelligence-based commerce agents and connect AI apps to external systems.
The standard, known as the Model Context Protocol, enables such AI apps as ChatGPT to connect to databases, search engines, and workflows, or specialized prompts, to access information and perform tasks. As a result, application developers can use MCP to create AI agents and direct payment integrations with Worldpay’s application programming interface, enabling application interoperability and scalability across evolving AI ecosystems, Worldpay says.
The protocol is available on Worldpay’s Developer Hub and GitHub, a Web-based platform where developers can store, manage, and collaborate on code. Microsoft Corp. acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion.

AI agents are becoming increasingly popular as consumers look for more AI-driven shopping and commerce actions. A recent study from Worldpay reveals 44% of shoppers in the United States would engage an AI agent to browse on their behalf. One advantage of AI agents is that they can anticipate shoppers’ needs based on browsing and purchasing history, automate routine purchases, such as reordering household goods, or schedule subscription renewals.
In October, Worldpay announced it will support the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a standard that allows artificial-intelligence agents to work with buyers and businesses to complete transactions.
“Agentic commerce is rapidly emerging as the next evolutionary step in online shopping,” Cindy Turner, chief product officer at Worldpay, says in a statement. “By launching Worldpay MCP, we’re answering the demand of developers and merchants. We’re not adding another protocol, we’re making them all work together for sellers.”
For developers and merchants, payments through AI agents optimize payment flows, enabling businesses to deliver seamless, personalized, and efficient commerce experiences, the big processor adds.
Worldpay says the launch of MCP is part of its focus on innovation to help shape the future of commerce.
Earlier this year, Worldpay reached an agreement to be acquired by Global Payments Inc. for $22.7 billion. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2026, pending regulatory approval.
