Nuvei To Acquire SimplexCC for $250 Million and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 5/7/21

  • Payments provider Nuvei Corp. announced an agreement to acquire SimplexCC Ltd., whose technology enables market participants to buy or sell cryptocurrencies. The $250-million deal is expected to close in the second half of the year and comes on the heels of Nuvei’s agreement to acquire sports-betting technology specialist Mazooma Technical Services Inc. for $56 million.
  • Money transfer provider Paysend said U.S. consumers can send money to Canada. Recipients receive the funds in Canadian dollars via Interac. Paysend also named several executives to positions.
  • Processor FIS Inc. said first-quarter revenue in its merchant solutions segment was $966 million, a 3% increase from $935 million in the same quarter last year. Much of the growth came from volume in North America and in e-commerce. Overall revenue for the quarter was $3.2 billion, a 3.2% increase from $3.1 billion last year. FIS had a loss of $370 million for the quarter, but posted a $15 million profit in the year-ago quarter.
  • U.S. retail sales excluding automotive and gasoline increased 23.2% year-over-year in April, according to the Mastercard SpendingPulse report. They increased 10.8% compared to April 2019. Online sales increased 19.9% from April 2020 and 95.6% from April 2019.
  • Bill.com, a provider of cloud-based software for business payments, said it has agreed to acquire Divvy Inc., a provider of financial software enabling businesses to combine corporate cards with expense-management capability. Bill.com will pay approximately $2.5 billion in cash and stock for the company in a deal expected to close by Sept. 30.
  • Payments provider Paya Holdings Inc. reported first-quarter payment volume of $9.5 billion, up 24% year-over-year, with revenue of $55.3 million, up 12%.
  • Green Dot Corp. had revenues of $393.5 million in the first quarter, an 8.6% increase from $362.2 million a year ago. It posted a net income of $25.8 million, a 45.1% decrease from $46.8 million a year prior.
  • GreenBox POS LLC, a payments provider specializing in blockchain technology, said it processed $315 million in transaction volume in the first quarter, a 140% increase from the fourth quarter of 2020. GreenBox also announced Carl. J. Williams joined its board of directors. Williams most recently was chief executive and chairman of Planet Payment Inc.
  • ACI Worldwide Inc. report $285.2 million in first quarter revenue, a 2.6% decrease from $291.5 million in the year-ago quarter. ACI narrowed its loss to $1.9 million from $24.4 million.
  • MoneyGram International Inc. reported first-quarter revenue of $310.1 million, up 19% year-over-year. Money-transfer revenue grew 29%, but bill-payment proceeds slipped nearly 3%.
  • Marqeta, a card issuing platform, said Afterpay Ltd. is using its service to issue virtual cards as part of its in-store offering the Australia and New Zealand markets. Afterpay is a buy now, pay later provider.
