Eye on E-Commerce: Many Eye BNPL Payment This Holiday Season; Etsy Renews Seller Payout Deal

As consumers ready for the holiday shopping season, many are making budgets a priority, according to new PayPal Holdings Inc. data. Meanwhile, Etsy, a popular e-commerce site for crafted goods, renewed its seller payout deal with Payoneer.

PayPal says its 2026 Holiday Shopping Survey, which canvassed 2,005 U.S. adults in early September, found that 36% said setting and sticking to a budget will be important for them this holiday shopping season. Thirty-two percent will compare prices and 31% will wait for sales or promotions to make holiday gift purchases.

That eye on thriftiness also may carry over into how consumers choose to pay for their gifts. PayPal says 55% of consumers have used or considered using a buy now, pay later payment method. Among this cohort, 75% plan to use or are considering it for this holiday season.

One benefit of splitting a purchase cost, usually into four installments, is it can ease the financial hit. Fifty-nine percent of respondents like the feeling of being in more control and spreading out the costs that BNPL affords.

To accommodate their holiday spending, 39% would cut back on dining out and gifts for themselves, cited by 35%.

In related online shopping news Payoneer Inc. says Etsy renewed Payoneer’s service providing payouts to Etsy sellers through 2029. The two companies began working together in 2023.

Eligible sellers can receive their payouts via Payoneer in U.S. dollars and withdraw them directly to local bank accounts. Sellers also can manage more than 70 currencies via Payoneer.

Payoneer will remain the payments partner in 16 markets in Asia, Europe, South America, and the Middle East. Nuvei Corp.  announced in June it would acquire Payoneer for $2.75 billion, a deal expected to close in mid-2027.
