Just 23% Trust AI: Visa and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 9/9/26

  • Some 72% of U.S. consumers have used an AI assistant for shopping, but just 23% trust AI to manage payments, according to the Visa Trust Index for agentic commerce. The survey took place May 26-28 among a sample of 2,065 consumers, though the sample for the payment transaction question was 1,028 to 1,034 per brand tested.
  • In related news, Visa announced it will work with the World Bank Group to expand access to digital financial services in emerging markets. The agreement calls for the International Finance Corp. to share credit settlement risk for Visa transactions conducted through enrolled banks.
  • Payments services company PayNearMe Inc. said it acquired the technology assets of Marr Labs, an AI company that develops agentic services to automate voice, messaging, and workflows in regulated environments. Terms were not disclosed. PayNearMe, founded in 2009, said it processes more than $50 billion in payments annually.
  • National Retail Solutions, a point-of-sale platform, reported same-store sales fell 1.1% in August year-over-year and were down 1.8% compared to July. For the three months through August, however, same-store sales increased 1.5% year-over-year. NRS releases its same-store sales reports monthly. The NRS network comprises more than 30,000 stores.
  • Canada-based payments platform Digital Commerce Payments introduced a checkout option that allows merchants to offer Interac’s e-Transfer Business Request Money feature for online purchases. Interac e-Transfer processed 1.6 billion transactions in 2025, according to the company. The platform is part of Interac Corp., a 42-year-old company owned by a consortium of Canadian financial institutions.
  • Payments provider NMI released an embeddable component suite to make it easier for software platforms to embed payments into their own products.
  • Checkout.com said it is supporting retailer Best Buy’s Marketplace, which enables third-party sellers to integrate their products into the Best Buy app and Web site.
  • Bluefin Payment Systems said it is expanding its support for Advanced Encryption Standard capabilities.
  • Toast Inc. released its 2026 Voice of the Retail Industry Survey that found 66% are likely to open a new location in the next year and that 90% are experimenting with AI services. Toast surveyed 492 retail executives with 16 or fewer locations.
  • Buy now, pay later provider Splitit joined the Jack Henry & Associates Inc. Fintech Integration Network. This extends Splitit beyond its card-based installment payments, and their existing lines of credit, and enables users to assign debit and checking accounts as the repayment source.
