UPDATED: Eye on Amazon: Alexa Will Pay Your Bills

Amazon.com Inc.’s payments ambitions continue to manifest themselves with Monday’s announcement that Paymentus Corp. will enable bill payment and management via Amazon’s voice-controlled Alexa devices.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Paymentus said billers on the Paymentus Instant Payment Network will be able to offer consumers a way to link their utility accounts to Amazon devices equipped with Alexa, the e-retailer’s voice assistant. They will then be able to ask for information about their bills. Eventually, Amazon Pay will be enabled so consumers can pay their bills from participating utility companies via Alexa, or on the Web with the information stored in their Amazon accounts.

Paymentus says the Amazon integration will further grow its network and add new modes of engagement between billers and their customers. “Based on customer feedback and the rapid adoption of cloud-based voice services to help manage our everyday lives, technologies like Alexa will have a profound impact on how businesses and consumers interact,” Dushyant Sharma, Paymentus chairman and chief executive, said in a statement. “Paymentus is very excited to enable this new feature.”

Consumers will be able to use their Alexa devices to manage and eventually pay bills from utility companies that use Paymentus.

Paymentus has a similar integration with PayPal Holdings Corp. Paymentus serves more than 1,500 billers, including 700 utilities that will have immediate access to Alexa.
