NewStore Becomes the Latest Processor to Offer Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone

NewStore Inc., a payments-platform provider specializing in mobile transactions, has become the latest processor to roll out Apple Inc.’s Tap to Pay on iPhone solution to its merchants in the United States. The payment option, which allows merchants to accept Apple Pay and other contactless payments by using an iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app, will be available through the NewStore Associate App. Features within the app include mobile POS and inventory management.

Several retailers within NewStore’s merchant network will initially offer Tap to Pay on iPhone at select locations, including Burton Snowboards, apparel retailers GANNI, Outdoor Voices, and Vince. Offering Tap to Pay on iPhone enables NewStore merchants to deliver transactions at checkout that are fast and more secure, the processor says.

To initiate a purchase at checkout using Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants prompt the customer to hold their iPhone or Apple Watch to pay with Apple Pay, their contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet near the merchant’s iPhone. The payment is completed using near-field communication (NFC) technology. Apple, which announced the launch of Tap to Pay on iPhone in February, says more than 90% of retailers in the U.S. accept ApplePay.

Among merchants within its network that are the first to roll out Tap to Pay on iPhone, NewStore says 50% of credit card transactions are occurring via the technology.

“The biggest benefit of Tap to Pay on iPhone for us comes down to the impact it has on checkout speed,” Brian McAllister, director of global operations, consumer direct for Burton Snowboards, says in a prepared statement. “Our store guides have been able to shorten the payment-processing time by as much as 30%. Those seconds add up during peak hours, and the time saved allows our guides to better serve customers and take care of other important tasks.”

Earlier this year, NewStore helped Adyen NV develop an integration for Tap to Pay on iPhone enabling Adyen to roll out the payment option to its merchants. Adyen merchants that were among the first to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone include Vince, Burton, apparel retailers G-Star, and Scotch & Soda.

“Our vision has always been to allow brands to run their stores solely on iPhone, eliminating the need for traditional POS technology, which can be clunky, expensive, and not always user-friendly,” NewStore chief executive and founder Stephan Schambach, says in a prepared statement. “The NewStore platform was built around enabling seamless payments from the start, and Tap to Pay on iPhone allows us to offer an even more convenient and secure contactless payment experience for our customers.”
