Justice Department Investigating Visa Debit Acceptance and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 3/19/21

  • The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Visa Inc.’s practices regarding online and in-store debit card acceptance, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal. The probe is centered on whether Visa has restricted merchants’ ability to flow transactions over less-costly networks, according to sources who spoke to the newspaper.
  • Fintech Enova International said it acquired Pangea Universal Holdings, a payments provider specializing in mobile, international money transfers. Terms were not disclosed.
  • Pushpay Holdings Ltd., which offers digital payments technology for churches and nonprofits, is co-sponsoring Code for the Kingdom Seattle, a Friday and Saturday hackathon aimed at creating new products and services for places of worship.
  • Payment Logistics said its Paygistix payments technology received certification from developer Retail Realm for use with its Max Pay Global product.
  • Payactiv Inc., a specialist in earned-wage access, appointed former Blackhawk Network executive David Tate chief revenue officer and Peter Mullen, a former Netflix executive, senior vice president of marketing.
  • More than 3 million merchants outside of Mainland China began accepting UnionPay cards in 2020, bringing the worldwide total to approximately 55 million, UnionPay said. Some 70% of North American merchants now accept the brand.
