Credit card users are almost as satisfied using a buy now, pay later option as they are a credit card, finds new research from YouGov. Meanwhile, American Express Co. is adding new perks to entice its cardholders.
The YouGov report, which is based on rolling survey data collected from U.S. consumers between August 2024 and August 2025, found that while BNPL is often viewed as a payment method beyond credit cards, even those who are satisfied with credit cards are using BNPL instead.
When asked how often BNPL is a payment choice, 23% of all BNPL users said once a month, compared with 22% of satisfied credit card holders who did. The percentages are also close for other frequencies. Of those who use BNPL once every two to three months, 28% of credit card users said they do and 26% of all BNPL said so. Eighteen percent of each group said they use it once every four to six months, and 32% of credit card holders and 33% of all BNPL users select BNPL once every six to 12 months.

One reason why the numbers are close is both groups like the features of a BNPL payment, YouGov says. “Half of satisfied credit card customers using BNPL appreciate the ability to spread payments over time, while 40% specifically highlight interest-free options. Convenience is also important, with 41% citing ease of use,” the report says. That compares to 51% of all BNPL users who like the ability to spread payments over time and 36% who like the interest-free option.
“…Satisfied credit card users aren’t replacing their cards but instead using BNPL as an additional payment tool. BNPL companies and traditional financial institutions alike may find valuable opportunities within this dual-use segment,” YouGov says. YouGov is a United Kingdom-based research firm.
In related news, American Express is tailoring its perks to entice more use of its cards. The card brand added several perks for cardholders in South Florida in conjunction with AmEx being named an official payments partner of Hard Rock Stadium, the Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix, and the Miami Dolphins National Football League team.
Some new perks include exclusive concession offers at venues, access to presale event tickets, and a dedicated entrance. Higher tier cardholders also can visit an exclusive lounge at Hard Rock Stadium.
