CFPB Revises Wise Penalties and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 5/16/25

  • The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has revised a January order for remittance provider Wise that reduces its $450,000 penalty and $2.025 million fine to $45,000 and to redress the harm to consumers. On Jan. 30, the CFPB, under Rohit Chopra who was fired in February, had ordered the previous penalties to resolve claims alleging Wise advertised inaccurate fees and failed to properly disclose exchange rates and other costs.
  • AppTech Payments Corp. reported an operating loss of $2.6 million in the first quarter, down from a $3-million loss in the same period last year. On a cash basis, the loss narrowed to $1.8 million from $2.2 million a year ago. Revenue more than doubled in the quarter from a year ago, to $217,000.
  • The digital-wallet provider Ansa has agreed to support payments for Scream Truck, a fleet of food trucks that says it serves more than 40,000 houses per month.
  • Stablecorp, a provider of technology for digital assets, says it has received a total of $1.8 million in growth capital from Coinbase Ventures, Side Door Ventures, and other existing investors.
  • The cryptocurrency app Bitget Wallet announced it has surpassed 80 million users worldwide seven years after its startup. Since 2018, it said it has processed more than 250 million transactions worth more than $12 billion in volume.
  • Fraud prevention platform Riskified said it is now an AWS Accelerate Partner, enabling it to offer its services into AWS deployments.
  • “State of Stablecoins 2025,” a report from digital-asset technology firm Fireblocks, indicates 49% of responding banks, fintechs, and crypto-native firms are actively using stablecoins for payments, while faster settlement is the top rationale, indicated by 48% of respondents. The research, which concludes stablecoins “are no longer in pilot mode,” canvassed nearly 300 top executives.
  • Eric Cotton, president and chief payments officer for Central Payments, has joined the company’s board of directors.
