Boston’s New Fare System and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 3-21-18

  • The Electronic Transactions Association announced its inaugural group of “Forty Under 40” up-and-coming payments-industry leaders.
  • Cubic Corp. said its Cubic Transportation Systems unit and John Laing, a builder of mass-transit infrastructure, came to terms with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to build and operate a new fare-payment system, including contactless bank card payments through mobile devices. The MBTA chose the consortium for the project last November.
  • Commercial payments provider Fleetcor Technologies Inc. said its Comdata processing unit is providing the new credit and prepaid cards for drivers using Uber Freight, an app that connects trucking companies with loads to haul. The cards are part of the new Uber Freight Plus program that offers app users discounts on fuel and maintenance.
  • TableSafe Inc., a vendor of EMV-capable pay-at-table gear for restaurants, said 71 Above and Takami Sushi have become the first restaurants in the Los Angeles area to adopt its Rail payment platform.
  • A personal-finance app called Debx launched to enable cardholders to pay off credit card purchases as they happen, allowing cardholders to compile rewards points while avoiding debt. Users link their checking account to their credit cards and set spending rules. Founder Ben Psillas is also the founder of the Allpoint ATM network.
