Visa CEO Calls Bitcoin “Speculative” and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 1/18/18

  • Visa Inc. CEO Alfred Kelly told CNBC that Bitcoin currently is a “speculative commodity” and not “a payment-system player.” Visa only will process fiat currency transactions, Kelly said at the National Retail Federation’s annual conference this week in New York.
  • Varo Money Inc. said it raised $45 million in a Series B funding round led by Warburg Pincus and The Rise Fund, with 30 other participants. The e-banking and personal-finance information startup, which is seeking a national bank charter, said it has now raised more than $78 million in less than two years.
  • ThreatMetrix has agreed to provide authentication services to the online fraud-detection and scoring engine of GlobalOnePay, a unit of payments provider Pivotal Payments, through ThreatMetrix’s Digital Identity Network service.
  • Atom Tickets, whose mobile app allows users to buy movie tickets, said one-third of its users also use the app to pre-order concessions, with popcorn being most popular.
