GasBuddy’s New Payment Service Discounts Gasoline Prices

Consumer affinity for the cheapest gas prices birthed smart-phone app GasBuddy, and now the app has sired a way for consumers to actually make the payment at fill up.

Boston-based GasBuddy recently announced its Pay with GasBuddy service, which connects a consumer’s checking account with a GasBuddy-issued card. After enrolling in the service and linking the checking account in the GasBuddy app, consumers receive a Pay with GasBuddy card in the mail. To pay, they swipe this card at the pump. Transactions use the automated clearing house system, which typically processes payments at less cost for merchants than a credit or debit card at the pump.

Details about merchant requirements and any fees they may pay were not provided.

The incentive to use the service is at least a 5-cent discount per gallon. GasBuddy promotes a 15-cent discount per gallon on the first purchase. GasBuddy said the service works everywhere, but provided no additional details. It says the GasBuddy app has been downloaded nearly 70 million times.

Pay with GasBuddy is the result of a strategic partnership between GasBuddy and Wex Inc. announced earlier this year. Then, Wex said it wanted to “develop new opportunities that leverage our massive advantage in infrastructure and payments expertise to open new markets.”

GasBuddy’s original app enables consumers to view price comparisons for fuel.
