Eye on Restaurants: Qu Updates Its Kiosk; Purdys Chocolatier Picks Square

In the fiercely competitive restaurant market, point-of-sale systems makers can’t afford to slack off when it comes to features for restaurant operators. That’s why companies frequently develop new features. Qu POS Inc. and Square, separately, are the most recent examples.

First up is Qu, an Arlington, Va.-based POS system maker with its latest updates to its kiosk. Among the news features are the ability to select multiple cross-sell add ons; prompts for a consumer to join a loyalty program; the Qu Flex feature that can switch between consumer-facing and employee-facing screens in seconds; and instant updates to menus and pricing, and if an item is out of stock, typically known as 86s in the restaurant industry.

In its “2025 State of Digital” report, Qu found that 62% of brands are either using, launching, or testing kiosks in their restaurants. That’s up from 42% in the 2024 report. Qu says 170 brands operating in the United States participated in the 2025 survey on which the report is based, and all had 20 or more locations. This year’s report also found that cost and operational disruption were the top barriers to kiosk adoption.

Purdys Chocolatier adopted a suite of Square POS technology and software for its more than 80 locations.

Qu says this latest round of updates to its kiosk helps address the issues it found in its research. “Kiosks aren’t just about labor savings. They’re part of the guest journey, a core expression of the brand, and a way to drive more revenue,” Brian Crum, Qu vice president of product, says in a statement. “These updates reflect what operators told us they need most.”

In related news, Square, the acquiring arm of Block Inc., says Purdys Chocolatier, a Canadian retailer, adopted its POS technology for in-store use.

Purdys, with more than 80 locations, has installed Square’s service for the point of sale and business operations. The stores are using Square Register and the newly available Square Handheld for checkout, operating on the Square for Retail Plus system. Purdys, which recently began offering its products in grocery stores, also tapped Square Marketing and Square Gift Cards.
