Eye on Processing: EMS’s LegitScript Tie-in for Health Care; Insurer Picks InvoiceCloud for Billing and Payment Improvements

Electronic Merchant Systems LLC is teaming up with LegitScript to give its health-care merchants access to a certification tag, while InvoiceCloud says Western National Insurance Group picked it for a new digital-payment and policyholder-relations service.

Cleveland-based EMS, which processes approximately $6 billion in annual volume for 25,000 merchants, says the deal with Portland, Ore.-based LegitScript enables a way for EMS merchants to obtain LegitScript Certification, which indicates the healthcare providers operate legally and transparently.

LegitScript says credit card networks require certification for pharmacy merchants and telemedicine providers. Many payment service providers also require certification before opening a merchant account, it says.

EMS says the collaboration between the two companies also helps them manage risks that come from high-risk merchants, which is usually the case for drug and pharmacy merchants. While these merchants are always designated as high risk, LegitScript on its Web site says its certification may eliminate the need to pay the annual high-risk fee associated with this classification.

The deal also means EMS merchants will have a streamlined application process for the certification, EMS says.

“For healthcare business owners, particularly those in the telemedicine and pharmacy spaces, obtaining LegitScript Certification is a critical step in gaining access to essential services like payment processing and online advertising. This partnership between EMS and LegitScript streamlines the certification process, making it easier for businesses to achieve and maintain compliance,” EMS says in a statement.

Meanwhile, Braintree, Mass.-based InvoiceCloud says its work with Western National Mutual Insurance Co. will support the insurer’s payment processing and reduce incoming billing-related calls.

Edina, Minn.-based Western National will access InvoiceCloud’s tools via Guidewire Software Inc.’s insurance software. InvoiceCloud says it signed five other Guidewire clients in 2023. Guidewire is based in San Mateo, Calif.
