Discover Postpones Fuel-Pump EMV Shift and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 5/14/20

  • In line with previous decisions from Visa Inc. and American Express Co., Discover Network said it is postponing its deadline for EMV capability at gas pumps to April 16, 2021. The original deadline was Oct. 16.
  • Micro Merchant Systems, a provider of pharmacy technology, launched a service that allows patients to make contactless copays by responding to a text or email that contains a link to a payment portal. At the portal, the patient submits credit card information.
  • Food and drink and retail sales have rebounded to levels seen just before Covid-19 restrictions among merchants tracked by point-of-sale technology provider CardFlight Inc., according to the company’s latest weekly report. All major business categories tracked by the report saw sales increase 10.6% in the past week.
  • Overall e-commerce sales volume declined 3% for the week ended May 11 compared to the previous week, only the third time in the past 10 weeks this measure has dropped, according to the latest report from Signifyd Inc., a vendor of anti-fraud technology for online commerce.
  • Forty-six percent of consumers shopping at grocery stores are paying by credit card compared to 27% in December, according to survey data from Bankrate.com. Conversely, 39% are using debit cards vs. 50% in December. Cash usage has dropped from 22% to 15%.
  • Top executives at vending-machine payments specialist USA Technologies Inc. have taken a 20% cut in pay effective May 11 and continuing through the end of the year owing to “uncertainty created by the Covid-19 global pandemic,” the company announced. The move follows the May 8 appointment of Sean Feeney as chief executive as part of a management shakeup.
  • Integrated-payment services helped offset Covid-19’s impact on daily consumer payment volume at Priority Technology Holdings Inc., the merchant processor said in reporting first-quarter results. Revenue for the period rose 10.6% year-over-year to $96.9 million. Merchant processing on bank cards increased 2.6% to $10.6 billion.
