Toast Inc. has agreed to work with American Express Co. to leverage the online reservation capabilities of the Resy and Tock platforms, which are owned by AmEx, as well as Toast’s Digital Chits technology. That technology allows restaurant staff to view customer information on Toast devices.
Both companies will also look for ways to offer American Express cardholders benefits that engender loyalty. Toast says it intends to raise the profile of restaurants wineries, cafes, and bars using the Resy and Tock platforms by making their listings available on the Local by Toast app, as well as on Toast Tables, the company’s reservation and waitlist-management solution that is integrated with the Toast point-of-sale app. Toast, in a statement to Digital Transactions News, says the collaboration will help provide personalized experiences for diners.
It also should help restaurants drive demand, Toast says. “Restaurants constantly seek ways to drive demand, and this partnership intends to give restaurants, wineries, cafes, and bars greater visibility by making their listings from Resy and Tock available on the Local by Toast app, alongside those using Toast Tables,” Toast says. Toast and AmEx will use their technologies to offer more personalized hospitality for guests and AmEx cardholders to help restaurants “fill their dining rooms with high-value diners.”

AmEx has been actively growing its presence in restaurants through acquisitions. In 2024, it acquired Rooam, a contactless-payment platform for restaurants, bars, music venues, and arenas, for an undisclosed sum. In the same year, it bought Tock for $400 million from Squarespace Inc. The acquisition of Rooam enabled integrations with third-party restaurant-technology platforms such as Toast. The acquisition of Tock brought 7,000 new restaurants and other venues into the AmEx network, while the deal for Resy in 2019 brought 20,000 restaurants and venues to the network.

“This partnership is a natural evolution of our investment in this growing category,” Alex Drummond, executive vice president and general manager of American Express membership portfolio services, says in a statement.
AmEx cardholders spent more than $87 billion on dining in the United States in 2024, Drummond adds.
New features developed through the partnership are expected to begin rolling out in 2026. “We look forward to unlocking added visibility for restaurants and enabling more personalized service, leading to more memorable—and repeat—visits,” Toast chief executive and cofounder Aman Narang says in a statement.
