- The U.S. Secret Service began warning financial institutions last week about ATM “jackpotting,” in which a machine quickly spits out huge amounts of cash after being physically compromised by organized gangs and infected with a variant of malware first seen in 2013, according to KrebsOnSecurity. Hackers are especially targeting Diebold Nixdorf Inc.’s front-loading Opteva models, but both Diebold and ATM maker NCR Corp. have alerted customers, the news site reported.
- Discover Financial Services said it is now sponsoring the city of San Diego’s bike-sharing program, enabling the program to expand its fleet by 20% and add more stations. The program features bicycles emblazoned with Discover’s logo and a new mobile app; riders will get 20% off bike rentals if they pay with a Discover card.
- Point-of-sale equipment maker Epson America Inc. said payments provider Electronic Payments Inc. certified an Epson receipt printer for use with its services.
- Credit-union payment processor Co-Op Financial Services said it processed 6.6 billion payment transactions last year, double 2016’s 3.3 billion, with much of the growth attributable to Co-Op’s $100 million acquisition of TMG, formerly The Members Group, in April.
- The Western Union Co. opened what it calls its Technology Engineering Centre in Pune, India, to develop products and services using machine learning, robotics, and biometrics; the facility will employ more than 1,000 workers.
- Cloud-based platform provider Dream Payments appointed Brad Staudt as senior vice president of sales; Staudt is a veteran of payment firms Clearent, TransFirst, Global Payments, and First Data.
