SpotOn Launches a Tip Payout App; Toast Looks to Fight Food Insecurity

SpotOn Transact LLC has launched DayCheck, an earned-tip payment app that automates employee tip payouts for restaurants.

The app, which integrates with SpotOn’s Teamwork labor-management platform, automatically calculates tips earned by employees. After tips have been calculated, the information flows into Teamwork, which records the payouts in the payroll report, allowing payroll providers to tax the tips. Tips are then paid to an employee’s account, according to his or her preferences. Restaurants also do not need to prefund tip payouts in a separate account, SpotOn says.

Restaurant employees can receive their tips through DayCheck instantly, at the same time each day they work, or three days after completing a shift. Employees opting for instant payouts pay a transfer fee between 95 cents and $2.95, depending on the amount of the transfer, according to the SpotOn Web site. A debit card enabling free instant payouts for employees at no expense to the business will be available soon, SpotOn says. Employees opting for standard payouts pay no transfer fees.

“DayCheck is about making life easier for operators,” SpotOn chief executive Matt Hyman says in a statement. “Owners get a solution that enhances their cash flow and streamlines operations, while employees gain the flexibility to access their money when they need it. It’s a win-win for restaurants looking to attract and retain staff in today’s competitive labor market.”

In related news, restaurant point-of-sale provider Toast Inc. has launched its Changemakers Program, a grant program aimed at supporting restaurants that address food insecurity. The program is part of Toast’s $5-million, five-year commitment to combating the food-insecurity issue in the United States, according to the company. That initiative launched earlier this summer.

Toast, which is partnering with Hello Alice and the Global Entrepreneurship Network, will collectively award $150,000 in grants to 15 restaurants in the United States working to combat hunger in their communities. Each of the 15 restaurants will receive $10,000 to support their ongoing efforts to address food insecurity. Hello Alice is a platform that helps small businesses secure grants and capital and provides access to educational resources. The Global Entrepreneurship Network promotes collaboration between entrepreneurs, policymakers, and support organizations to fuel business growth, create jobs, and accelerate innovation.

Food insecurity affected 13.5% of households in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Between 2020 and 2023, 84% of restaurant operators made charitable contributions, with 75% of those operators donating food, according to the National Restaurant Association. Food insecurity is defined as lacking access to sufficient food, or enough food of sufficient quality, to meet basic needs.
