Sezzle Notches Another Retailer for its BNPL Option

Online outdoor retailer Backcountry now offers buy now, pay later payments from Sezzle Inc. The payment option is available at Backcountry.com and in-store, and at its Steep & Cheap, Competitive Cyclist, and MotoSport brands.

Minneapolis-based Sezzle says Backcountry, which is owned by private-equity firm TSG Consumer Partners LLC, switched to Sezzle from a BNPL competitor. Though the rival was not disclosed in the press release, Backcountry added Klarna AB’s BNPL service in 2020.

Sezzle says Backcountry’s adoption of its service was influenced by higher approval rates. Notably, the service can approve a wider range of consumer profiles that “aligns with Backcountry’s commitment to inclusivity and customer satisfaction,” Sezzle says.

Backcountry says this made Sezzle a better option for its installment payment option. Sezzle enables consumers to split their purchases into four interest-free payments over six weeks.

Though BNPL predates Covid, its use increased in the United States during the pandemic and has become a mature online and in-store payment option. In July, Sezzle added Spanish as a language option in its app.

In general, most consumers —89%—are satisfied with their BNPL choices, a TransUnion survey found this summer.
