Buy now, pay later platform Affirm Holdings Inc. has expanded its partnership with Stripe Inc. to make its BNPL services available to in-store shoppers through the Stripe terminal. Stripe, which has deployed more than a million terminals, is making Affirm available as a payment method to physical merchants in the United States and Canada.
Stripe, which supports Affirm for online purchases, added the BNPL provider as a payment option for in-store purchases because it did not want to limit the lift on sales offering BNPL as a payment option generates to e-commerce sales, the company says. More than 80% of retail spending still takes place in physical stores, according to Stripe.
In-store shoppers will be prompted at checkout with Affirm’s BNPL payment option through the Stripe Terminal. Upon opting to pay with Affirm, in-store shoppers scan a QR code to go through Affirm’s eligibility check. Once approved, consumers can choose their payment option, such as paying for the purchase over 30 days. Payment options as long as 60 months are also available. Consumers can select Affirm for purchases ranging in value from $30 to $30,000. Interest rates for BNPL loans through Affirm range from 0% to 36%.
In addition to its expanded partnership with Stripe, Affirm reached a deal with Google Pay to make its BNPL option available via autofill on Chrome, Google’s Web browser. Affirm initially partnered with Google Pay in 2024.
“By integrating Affirm with autofill on Chrome, we can deliver payment choice and flexibility seamlessly and at scale,” Vishal Kapoor, senior vice president of product for Affirm, says in a statement.
Offering Affirm as a payment option through Google Chrome autofill will create a checkout experience “that combines flexibility and transparency with speed, security, and convenience,” Kapoor adds.
In related news, Zip Co. also added the autofill on Chrome integration. Zip says this will help Zip users with easier access to Zip’s BNPL payment option. It will remove steps from the checkout process, too, Zip says.
