State Attorneys General Cannabis Appeal to Congress and other Digital Transactions News briefs

  • A bipartisan group of 18 state attorneys general sent a letter to Congress asking lawmakers to advance legislation “that would allow states that have legalized medical or relational use of marijuana to bring that commerce into the banking system.” Marijuana remains illegal under federal law, forcing many legal cannabis businesses in 29 states to operate on a cash basis.
  • Mobile point-of-sale provider ShopKeep Inc. said it has integrated its software with the Clover Mini device from First Data Corp., which is an investor in ShopKeep.
  • U.S. Bancorp, owner of merchant acquirer Elavon, reported merchant-processing revenues of $400 million in the fourth quarter, down 1% from $404 million a year earlier. Global merchant transactions and volume rose 1% to 1.33 billion and $99.4 billion, respectively.
  • Citigroup Inc. said fourth-quarter purchase volume on its North American general-purpose credit cards rose 10% year over year to $78.5 billion.
  • Factor4 LLC said it has integrated its gift card platform with the Poynt smart terminal and made its solution available in Poynt’s app marketplace.
  • FocusPOS, a vendor of restaurant point-of-sale software, released Focus as a Subscription, which offers the software at a monthly cost.
  • Mobile imaging software provider Mitek Systems Inc. said its Mobile Verify product has reduced customer on-boarding times for Groningen, Netherlands-based blockchain provider Nocks B.V. from 12 hours to five minutes; Nocks uses the so-called Gulden blockchain that enables consumers and businesses to pay and get paid with fiat currency.
