PayPal Turns to InComm To Boost Digital Gift Card Presence

PayPal Inc. will use electronic gift card services from InComm Holdings Inc., a move that will enable PayPal to expand the number of retailers’ gift cards that it sells on the PayPal Digital Gifts store and in the eBay marketplace.

PayPal, a unit of San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc., will use InComm’s Digital Solutions technology, providing consumers with more retailers to choose from and a quick way to purchase and send digital gift cards. InComm is a prepaid card services provider.

The deal also should get Atlanta-based InComm’s services in front of consumers using mobile phones. “Consumers are increasingly adopting digital cards for gifts and self-use and looking to easily purchase and store these cards on their mobile devices,” said Mike Fletcher, general manager, InComm Digital Solutions “Collaborating with PayPal is helping drive adoption of mobile payments by making it easier than ever for consumers to do this, as well as empowering brands to capitalize on rising mobile sales and loyalty opportunities.”

PayPal’s Digital Gifts store currently includes brands like American Airlines, Facebook, Express, Dell, Sports Authority and Wine Enthusiast. PayPal launched its Digital Gifts store almost a year ago, enabling consumers to buy digital gift cards. The first merchant was Apple Inc.’s iTunes store.
