Mobile POS Devices To Reach 27 million by 2021 and other Digital Transactions News briefs from 7/2/18

  • Mobile-commerce technology provider Shopgate Inc. said it has joined the Shopfiy Plus Technology Partner Program, which will allow Shopify Plus merchants to access Shopgate’s mobile-app platform.
  • The installed base of mobile point-of-sale devices in the United States will grow to 27.7 million by 2021, compared to 3.2 million in 2014, when the trend was getting under way, according to projections by SpotOn, an mPOS provider. The company also predicts that fingerprint ID, facial recognition, and other forms of biometric authentication will be used with more than 18 billion transactions by 2021.
  • In related news, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said it has added fingerprint and facial recognition, as well as an embedded token, to its CashPro Mobile application, which is used by business clients to manage payments. The app claims more than 475,000 active users.
  • Check-scanning hardware and software producer Digital Check Corp. said all of its major product lines are prepared for the changes in the Federal Reserve’s Regulation CC that took effect Sunday. The Reg CC updates cover collections and returns for electronic checks and change how liability is assigned to financial institutions in cases of duplicate deposits.
  • Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce titan, filed for a patent covering the use of blockchain technology for cross-border transactions involving a third-party payment vendor. Alibaba is a unit of Ant Financial Inc., whose Alipay unit last week launched a blockchain-based service to handle money transfers between Hong Kong and the Philippines.
