ISOs Hone Their Tablet-based Point-of-Sale Products

Up Solutions, the cloud-based point-of-sale division of United Merchant Services Inc., has set its Up Tab restaurant POS system at zero cost for resellers, the company announced today.

Separately, Harbortouch has updated its POS Sales Center iPad app with new functions.

Comprising an Android-based tablet, stand, printer, card reader, and cash drawer, United Merchant Services’ Up Tab system will be available for salons and retail stores later this year.

Bryan Lee, sales manager at Hackensack, N.J.-based United Merchant Services, says resellers set their own prices for merchants to pay. The suggested retail price is $695 for one station. Additional stations at the same merchant cost agents $495. ISOs get one free station, he says. Merchants must process their credit and debit card transactions through United Merchant Services, and sign a three-year contract, Lee says.

Lee says the restaurant version offers features such as table seating and take-out management. The software in the salon version, available in July, enables salon owners to manage their station rentals to stylists. The retail version, which is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter, will offer some of the same features as a PC-based system, he says.

Included in the service is a hosted data service where restaurateurs, for example, can load their menu items for display on their tablet POS devices. By this summer, this cloud-based service will expand to enable online ordering, delivery service, and a mobile app, which will cost $10 a month, Lee says.

The Up Tab software was developed in-house, Lee says.

Harbortouch says the new version of its POS Sales Center iPad app enables its sales agents to complete an entire merchant application via the app, which includes a wizard to guide the agent through each step. The app also enables agents to prepare proposals and automatically populate the application documents using the merchant’s information from the proposal.

The update also includes demonstrations for hospitality, quick-serve restaurants and delivery, and retail, eliminating the need for a second demo-only app, Harbortouch says.
